The Chianina is present in Italy for over 2500 years. The "ox" Chianina was much appreciated by the Etruscans and Romans who used it in the triumphal processions and sacrifices to the gods, as we find described by the bucolic and the Latin poets, and depicted in Roman bronzes and carvings.
Its name comes from the Val di Chiana area where it is always brought up. Today it is present in Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio and up to a lesser extent in other regions.
The Chianina is recognizable by the white porcelain mantle, the black pigmentation of the face and tongue, head light and elegant with short horns, long and cylindrical trunk to the back and loins wide and limbs longer than in other races, this is fact, the world's largest cattle.
In the second post-war period, thanks to the ease of adaptation in different environments, the Chianina breed has become a cosmopolitan, crossing national borders, to Asia, China, Russia, Australia and the Americas. Once used primarily for work in the countryside, the Chianina is now considered one of the finest meat producers in the world.
